Tom completed his PhD studies under the tutelage of Prof Julian Rood and Dr Vicki Adams at Monash University in Melbourne, Australia (2014-2019). His PhD work focused on identifying and characterizing the factors involved in toxin plasmid conjugation and maintenance in the gram-positive pathogen Clostridium perfringens. These studies resulted in the characterization of a new family of conjugative plasmids in the Clostridia, as well as the identification of several genes that are responsible for plasmid incompatibility in C. perfringens. Tom will continue studying gram-positive bacteria in the Kline lab where he will turn his attention to key questions regarding pili biogenesis and regulation in Enterococcus faecalis. When he’s not glued to the lab bench Tom enjoys adding new tunes to his eclectic music library, expressing his laboratory-related frustrations with his guitar, keeping fit by loitering in the local Singaporean bouldering gyms and pursuing his lifelong dream of watching every movie ever made.
