Lab at the SCELSE Cluster 4 retreat

Why are female speakers under-represented at scientific conferences?
Another interesting study from microbiologist Jo Handelsman (see also this from her), here with Arturo Casadevall:
The Presence of Female Conveners Correlates with a Higher Proportion of Female Speakers at Scientific Symposia
In their analysis of the major ASM conferences over the past several, they present data showing a strong correlation between the presence of females on conference convening committees and the number of female speakers presenting at the conference. Also notable was the fact that they could only compare all-male convening committees to mixed gender convening committees; there were not enough all-female convening committees to include in the analysis.

Best wishes to Clair
After two years in the lab, Clair is moving on to new scientific endeavors.

Good luck Clair, we’ll miss you!
Congratulations Sarah!
Research fellow Sarah Holec gave birth to a healthy baby boy, Mathis. Congratulations to Sarah and Laurent!
Congratulations Sharon
Sharon’s abstract was selected for a talk at the EuroBiofilms 2013 Meeting in Ghent, Belgium, September 9-12.
Good bye Iris
Iris has completed a year in the lab as part of the CN Yang Scholar’s Program. From here, she will spend the summer doing research in a great lab at Vanderbilt University as part of their International Summer Research Academy. Good luck Iris!
New FYP students join the lab
Welcome Pei Yi and Valerie!
